Title: Install to USB out of space
Post by: rondi on May 29, 2019, 11:11:01 PM
Is there any way I can get a smaller UPGRADE,. or somehow increase the size of a file to keep it from running out of space when doing the UPGRADE? I can download 4.4 and install it on a SanDisk 16 or 32gb stick--it is the UPGRADE that causes me me problems. I have tried for 2 weeks to UPGRADE 4.4 and it gets part way thru the get sequence---- and gets an error "out of space or disk full error. I just formatted and reinstalled using rufus on a fat32 32gb USB stick, per the instructions and GParted shows the partition size of 29.81gb and 1.33gb used!---I tried a Menu/Install Upgrades and it failed--I got a number of "File has unexpected size" and then of course Hash errors--I've never seen those before--so I then used sudo apt autoremove and it reported "0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 687 no upgraded",. I then did sudo apt upgrade, and it reported " the following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required: libcomer2:i386 libjavascriptcoegtk-1.0-0 + 4 other ones, Use sudo apt autoremove to remove them--- It continued with the upgrade until at line 756 when it got an error--unable to make backup link ----No space left on device and following that it says--dpkg-deb:error:paste subprocess was killed by signal (Broken Pipe).

Maybe the problem is my W7 laptop--but I doubt it because I use the same usb port for other things and it has no problem---same with the SanDisk usb sticks.

If I could install smaller upgrades and have them just do portions of the whole upgrade perhaps I could get an install. Is there a way I delete portions of the Install AFTER the files it expects to download are loaded, but before the download (ie get) starts to execute. Then I could delete stuff I don't want or need---if it obvious of course.

It also appears autoremove does not delete enough space. Which directories contain the downloaded, uninstalled files that I can delete and restore some free space, on what appears to be a very small limited filespace?

Thanks for any help, Ron

edited to clarify--it is the UPGRADE that fails, not the initial install onto a USB stick.

Hi,

If your compter had Windows before, could it be it's trying to install Linux Lite in a "recovery" or "system" partition of your hard disk?
-Or- are you trying to Upgrade on the live USB key? This will not work, you would have to boot on the Live USB key and install to a second USB key, which is a special procedure if I remember correctly... I've never done this myself.

I just corrected my about post--My problem is NOT installing a Live LiLi 4.4 to a USB stick using my W7 laptop. It is getting the UPGRADE to complete without errors.

@rondi autoremove does not perform the action of clearing space, it simply removes dependent files that are no longer required on the system. You have stated that you have installed LL from a USB onto a USB. We need to know how much free space (or lack thereof) that LL has on the installed USB. Open a terminal on the installed LL that you are trying to upgrade and do:

Code: [Select]
df -h
and report the results here.

That is the first step.

Thanks for the reply Jerry,
I'm not an experienced Linux user--but I'm not a noob either.
2 mistakes I made in previous post---I referred to upgrades and I really meant UPDATES, AND I did not mean to imply 4.4 was installed from a USB. I installed the 4.4 iso (hash matched) from a W7 using Rufus 3.5 onto a 16gb fat32 formatted SanDisk memory stick. Rufus also reformatted fat32 and cleared the MBR.  It was from this USB stick I could not complete numerous updates. I had used your directions--Menu/Install Updates. Below is another post I made:     LiLi 4.4 installs ok, but updates do not

A lot of this is my misunderstanding of what folders/files need to be deleted to clear disk space and the fact that Autoremove does not remove (my interpretation was--- delete) any files.

Attached are screenshots of df -h and GParted after a new install prior to the shots.  I will await further instructions.

I started with LiLi 3.8--I can't find the original email--please post a link to it if the below is not good enough. I could not find anything in the Rules.

The Rules relate to etiquette. See Forum Posting Guidelines under the Introductions section. If anyone asks for Terminal information, it is better to use just text rather than screenshot the window itself. Thanks.

Much better, thanks. Yeah so what you need to do is find a tutorial that shows you how to do what is referred to as a persistence install. It's allows the USB to be partitioned correctly so that you don't run out of space so easily. Just Google 'Ubuntu persistent USB' There should be an abundance of tutorials to choose from.

Thanks for the suggestion DeepThought--I'll wade thru that--with all it's versions if what I have done does not work.
I just used Universal USB Installer with will add up to 4gb for persistence. I also split the 16gb in about half and added a exct4 partition labeled casper-rw. One of the sites said to delete the installed casper-rw, but when I did that--it would not boot. So I'm not sure if I will be able to use the ext4 partition. If not, I'll reformat it to fat32 for storage. My internet is soooo slow today--working on the towers I( guess.
my current df -h results.

Hi,

I'm sure you have a reason to use a persistent USB key but you could also repartition your Windows 7 internal harddrive (shrink it down 16G or more), add a partition for Linux Lite in this new space and install there.

Link to shrink partition:https://www.dummies.com/computers/pcs/how-to-shrink-a-hard-drive-volume-in-windows/ (https://www.dummies.com/computers/pcs/how-to-shrink-a-hard-drive-volume-in-windows/)
**NOTE : this will change your HDD boot sector, so I would suggest you backup an image of your whole HDD first to an external HDD, just in case.
**NOTE2: I use a Clonezilla 2.60 "Stable" USB boot key currently for this kind of procedure (Beginner mode, savedisk). Link here :https://clonezilla.org/downloads/download.php?branch=stable (https://clonezilla.org/downloads/download.php?branch=stable)

TheDead--I will be using the stick on different computers. I do not want to loose settings, desktop, documents etc when switching.

I just spent over 2 hours trying to install. My inet is ok today. I downloaded everything ok this time! It appears everything got unpacked, but the very end--line 2684 I got errors. I also included the last several lines of with no errors:

I also had about 3 or 4 times when while installing the screen went blank--not sure why. A minute or so later the cursor appeared and then it asked for my login and password. I have shut it down--- hoping it will boot correctly--enough for today..

It is (still) possible to "install" linux lite to 16gb or bigger usb instead of using live version with persistence. Live version is simply not optimized to your purpose! install linux lite to other usb stick with your stick and if possible unplug your HDD/SSD before install to prevent any unwanted changes and be VERY careful.
Title: Re: Install to USB out of space

Just unplug your HDD/SSD and connect one stick with live version and one stick with nothing important you want to save then install like you could install to HDD/SSD and after installing linux lite plug your HDD/SSD back. This will overwrite all data on the second stick!

After installing linux lite to the second stick you can format the first one and use it to your needs

Jerry said "Looks like we need a clear tutorial for the Help Manual. I'll add one in before the next LL release."

Thanks for the reply Jerry.  I thought I had posted today's info--but I guess I closed the browser before I hit Post.
I'll be happy to be the guinea pig/beta tester for your tutorial :)  If not--PLEASE tell me which file/directory I should delete.

I booted without errors this morning. The first thing I did was run sudo apt autoremove. It listed 3 files to remove, which it did, and then proceeded to try and pick up from the install yesterday-- I guess,. It had lots of errors--almost all of which were No space left. I saved the .txt file of the result of autoremove, and of the df -h after the autoremove.
I went to shut it down--and an error message popped up that the "Session Manager was not idle". I had no open apps--autoremove, screen shot, text editor were the only ones I used.  I looked at processes and found nothing that resembled a Session Manager. So I had press the laptop power switch. It did boot up again for met to get the current df for you, since it was not a normal shutdown--the .txt file of the autoremove and df were not saved in Home/Documents.

Here is the current df, which looks better. I was tempted to try another Install Updates---but I will wait for your instructions.

Also--since I have over 6gb left on the stick, formatted ext4 and the partition is labeled casper-rw--how do I get the casper-rw file to be located there? I followed the instruction on one the live persistence sites to delete the casper-rw file--but I could not boot after doing so. Another site have me edit grub.cfg to add the word "persistence" on a particular line and like the 3rd word in from the left. 4.4 does not have a grub.cfg in the grub folder. Almost all the sites I found were at least 2 years old--some 10yrs old. lots have changed since they were written! Could it be as simple as moving the file casper-rw to the directory casper-rw?

Thanks again for your help Jerry,

You can try this - https://www.linuxuprising.com/2019/03/create-persistent-storage-live-usb-with.html otherwise you can wait for a tested tutorial to appear in the Help Manual, I can't say when that is sorry.

Jerry & minesheep. thanks for your help--minesheep--I WILL try your way soon, but Jerry's link worked fine.

I'm marking this solved. The link Jerry provided worked perfectly--I followed it and it installed, had persistence, AND most importantly it installed updates with NO problems.
The only hiccup was in a line at the start:  sudo apt install --install-recommends mkusb mkusb-nox usb-pack-efi   I removed the " --install-recommends" and it all worked then.
The updates had 413 gets from numerous locations. When I installed mksub it also had some quite a few gets and I 1 point it told me to use autoremove to remove some. after that is was all downhill :)

After the updates my df -h is:
