Title: Google drive/SyncDrive problem
Post by: bobw on February 23, 2014, 10:57:46 AM
I've recently installed Linux Lite on an HP Pavilion PC as a dual boot alongside Windows XP.  I'm not techy, but I've managed to sort out most of the initial issues.  Yesterday I'd been trying to install SyncDrive when LL started to open multiple copies of the package installer, without concious instruction from me, then froze.  I eventually switched it off using the physical switch on the PC.

Now the system won't boot normally.  I've tried various options in the recovery mode boot, but they all end up at the command line and I don't have the expertise to try to repair it from there.  The dpkg (repair broken packages) option reported and attempted to fix various problems, and was still reporting problems when I ran it again.  The "sudo shutdown" command eventually stops at "checking battery state    [OK]" - I don't know whether this is normal.

Incidentally, Windows still boots normally.

Can anybody help, please?

Bob

In order to replicate what occurred, where did you install this program mentioned from, can you link it to us directly?

If possible can you reproduce some of the errors mentioned.

I downloaded SyncDrive 0.9-1 32 Bit from their website at http://syncdrive.fr/?page_id=734 and entered the 3 commands as instructed on that page.  I was having difficulty installing it as the package installer reported an unsatisfiable dependency.  Sorry, I can't remember the name of the package involved now, but I found it online and downloaded it.  When I tried to add the package in LL, it reported that the identical package was already installed.  I opted to install the new version to replace the existing one, in case that was corrupted.  However, the installer continued to report it as an unsatisfiable dependency when I tried  to install SyncDrive.

I've taken photos of the part of the script generated by the dpkg option in recovery mode boot.  I couldn't capture the full script in this way.  There are 6 photos - first one attached, others following in separate posts to comply with size restriction.

Hope this helps.

bobw, I'm going to have to delete these attachments because over time images will fill up our server. Please take a look at this thread - https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/index.php?topic=29.0 regarding how to post images. Combine all your images into one post please. Thank you.

Got it - sorry Valtam.

A bit more information - the package that was already installed on LL but was reported by the package installer as an unsatisfiable dependency was:  libjson0_0.9-1ubuntu1_i386.deb

Thank you for using imgur. What instructions did you use to install SyncDrive?

As I recall, I double-clicked on it in the Downloads directory, which launched the package installer.

I see, yeh that is unfortunately not the correct way to install it. SyncDrive support site is closed and it can't pull files, so it won't work. Your system looks all kind of messed up now. You're better off reinstalling, takes all of 10 minutes, you will have to use the 64bit version of Linux Lite as there is no 32bit support on ubuntu based distros offering 12.04 LTS, then use this guide to install Google Drive: http://thefanclub.co.za/node/151 This will be much better supported mid 2014 when the next major release of Linux Lite comes out. For now, it is all rather messy.

Thanks Valtam, I'll have a go at that.  I've just one concern at this stage.  I want to keep Windows installed - how do I get rid of the old Linux Lite installation and install the 64bit version in the same partition?  I'm new to all this and a bit nervous about messing about with partitioning and reformatting, so I need advice that assumes no prior knowledge.

When you do the new install it will ask you how you want to proceed. Although my advice is not to bother with this Google Drive until it is properly supported later this year.

I've now found that I have a 32-bit processor, so I can't install 64-bit Linux Lite and set up Google Drive sync through Grive, which is a issue for me.  I assume that this will still be a problem with the next release of LL, or are you aware of any developments that may solve it?

In the meantime, I'll reinstall the 32-bit.

It won't be a problem in the next release. But it is Google, they can change their mind at anytime. Cheers.

Sorry to bother you again, but I need more advice about reinstallation.

I want to keep Windows and replace the existing corrupt Linux Lite in its existing partition.  I'm now reinstalling, but it does not give me this as a standard option:

When I select the first option, it tries to set up another partition to install LL alongside the existing LL and Windows.  The third option takes me to:

At this point, I am out of my depth.  What should I do to replace the existing LL installation?

Highlight /dev/sda5 and click Change, choose to format on /. Leave the rest.

I've done that, selecting "use as" Ext 4.  When I click "Install now" I get message "No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu".  How do I do that?
