Sorry to revive this thread. I would have always agreed with the above. But, I'm running KDE Plasma (Kubuntu) for the first time and It seems to integrate somehow with Chrome's file chooser. Here's a screenshot:

Plasma has browser integration and that's why you see that. Try this, press Alt+Space or F2 and start typing, you'll see krunner listing matches for your query and among those your browser bookmarks as well.

[Maybe I'm wrong but I think thunar has nothing to do with this and that in fact, both GIMP and web browser use their own dialog box for managing files.

It's much different than I've seen in any other distro. Much more the way you'd expect it to be. It's not entirely Dolphin (the file manager in Plasma). But, it looks very similar to Dolphin. The window title is "KDialog." They must have created something to work with Chrome. (GIMP still has the same file chooser I've seen on other distros.).

Sorry, that's just the way they do it!

Depending on the number of pics you are working on, why not just use Thunar to view thumbnails - use the Zoom in to make them big enough and just right click open with GIMP.

Alternatively you could use something like XnViewMP to check out previews and then configure it to open the file for editing with GIMP. https://download.xnview.com/old_versions/XnViewMP-0943-linux-x64.deb will get you the last but current version. The latest has moved to Qt5.6 something and it can cause issues depending on other qt libraries installed. I use it extensively for curating and bulk rename, resize jobs as well.

Install dconf editor - launch it then click the search button. Type 'directories' - you're looking for org.gtk.Settings.FileChooser sort-directories-first

Click the slider to set that to True.

That will list folders before files in gtk apps

Thanks for posting that. I struggle with these app-specific file choosers. Your tweak fixes half of what I struggle with (directories mingled with files). IMO: this option (directories first) should be the distro's default.

These file choosers still bother me the way they show tiny thumbnails (they only show a large preview when you highlight a file). You wouldn't have a trick up your sleeve for that one, would you?

The folder manager works as normal from the desktop but is weir when you use it in apps.

In Gimp when you open and twitter.com when you look for an image to add to your message the unhelpful manager appears.

It lists all the files but does not display the folders these are hidden in the list of files so if you have loads of pictures and lots of folders it is difficult to find the photos yow want.

Tried it on desktop and laptop still weird.

Anyone, know how to fix this or install another Files Manager that might fix this?

Not sure what you are describing here with GIMP. A screenshot would help. As far as twitter... it is what it is,
