it brought up a list of updates in a dialogue box.. i clicked update. it asked me for my password then it closed and gave no indications that it was doing anything.

I then intentionally crashed the pc to check the recovery process... to go to the first option failed.. to go to the lower option worked.. then opened terminal and ran the manual sudo update / upgrade. as expected i was met with the error requiring me to use the --configure -a to correct it which suggests the update process had been running in the background when i crashed the pc... so having sorted that.. i manually re-ran update & upgrade in terminal to be sure and it all looks good.

Was literally that note on the screen at the time using your inbuilt popup screen :)

  • CPU: Intel Celeron CPU @ 2.4GHz 1 processor, 2 cores

  • MEMORY: 4Gb

  • VIDEO CARD: 1440 x 900

  • Kernel: 4.x
Do you get prompted to enter your password ?

On my system after entering password a dialog pops up that updates software sources
That closes and I get a dialog that says System is up to date.

So In my case I am getting feedback.

Are you getting any dialogs or just a blank screen.

Do you get an update complete at the end ?

It might be you are seeing a rare problem that was discussed a while back. See

https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/installing-software/updates-via-gui-no-indicator/

It seems that most systems show a progress indicator but a few don't.  Once you get used to it, you learn to wait patiently - make sure you don't accidentally start a second update while the first is still silently running.  Better to have no updates on a given day.

Little bit annoyed and miffed why there is no progress display or update to show when you are updating the system after install. Once you reboot from install and follow the on screen menu that pops up.. the first item is update system, but when selected and click on update, the box closes and then there is nothing to say if it is doing anything, how far through it is or anything without having to open up processes in terminal which is highly annoying and not clear for new users to linux.

Have i missed something on the update side of things or is this how it is please.

This is on a toshiba laptop, 2gb ram, 500gb hd and a dual core centrino cpu.
