It seems that it has to do with the age of the laptop (10-11 y/o) and perhaps the new 18.04 Ubuntu base. Because I tried with a Linux Mint 19 live usb and I had the same error message, while the laptop has Linux Lite 3.8 installed properly. So I must have installed LL 3.0 by usb when it came out. I also had Elementary installed last year or something.

And yes I've been making the usbs in the linux laptop just to be sure.

I don't really care about this laptop, I just wanted to upgrade for the sake of it. I don't mind if it stays with 3.8.

edit: I'm probably right regarding the base distro on 16.04 and 18.04. I tried with LL 3.8 and it booted in the live distro just fine. So perhaps they changed something in the 18.04 version.

This topic just shows up another sore spot for Windows users on older computers, one that MS could easily make a provision for given that Ubuntu and Debian are free software. I never use any specialized software to create bootable USB ISOs other than gparted. 4gig is more than enough for any linux ISO. Take any USB and format it using gparted to FAT32 first (zero it if used, or if it has DOS security provisions) If its more than 4gig create a primary partition of 4gig at the beginning of the drive. Download the ISO to a Debian or Ubuntu computer. From an Ubuntu or Debian computer right click on the ISO and select write to disk and the ISO will rewrite to whatever partition or disk you choose and be bootable. If you have 2gig or less of RAM on a Windows box writing any Linux full DE ISO using any method will give you problems. It's assumed that at 64bit you have at least 3gig of RAM on a Windows box. If you have or if you get an Ubuntu or Debian computer create all your live USB ISOs with it in the future. When series versions change create your new USB ISOs first before trashing your old OS. Forget about MS patched-up over-coded stopgap solutions forever. The next time I get a Windows computer in the shop to wreck I'm going to write a tutorial on how to install LL from the ISO on a FAT32 disk partition to the same disk wiping out Windows using gparted after download to prep the disk. It's easier than it sounds.

Hello,

I created my LL 4.0 4 GB USB stick with Etcher 1.4.4 and it worked perfectly.
Previously I had problem with a 32 GB USB stick.
May be have a look on BIOS parameters, as UEFI must be completely disabled.
Parameters setting may differs on each PC.

LL 4.8 running on Dell Optiflex 760
LL 4.8 running on Asus X52J
LL 4.8 running on Toshiba Satellite C670-14W
LL 3.8 (32 bits) running on HP Pavilion
LL 5.0 running on Samsung RV515

Good evening!

For the last couple of days I've been trying to try and install LL 4.0 but the live usb crashes with the attached message. I can see the loaded screen and select to Load LL4.0 or check the media. After I click to load LL4.0, the message appears.

It may have to do with the usb stick I'm using, because i've tried to create the live usb both from Win10 and LL3.8 (with Etcher, Rufus, unetbootin and usb-creator) and I get the same error each time.

I'm just asking to see if it's something else maybe...
