Title: can I use different passwords for boot-up decrypt and for admin?
Post by: Searchernow on March 01, 2020, 11:27:14 AM
Hi,

I am going to fresh install LL.4 with full disc encryption, single boot, and I would like to confirm that I can have different passwords for
1: login FDE decrypt
2: day-to-day user/admin, authentication of updates, unlocking email client etc.

The LL manual seems to say yes, 2 separate passwords, but I'd like to be sure.

More important, the procedure for Resetting your Password, does that also apply to a FDE password?

Thanks.

Yes you can have FDE password different that user password.

No! if you forget your fde password you are locked out, game over.

Thanks for your reply.

Actually that makes FDE far more secure, as it's possible for a non-FDE computer to have it's password re-set by another person who gains device access. Then you yourself are locked out!

Edit:

just to confirm, I have installed and two separate passwords work fine.
