Two updates:-

1.  The USB stick permissions from right-clicking the desktop icon that appears read (now anyway):-

Owner: root (root)
Access: Read & Write
Group: root
Access: None
Others: None

Which is why I'm guessing gparted run from the menu is not offering any formatting options.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to sudo run gparted from the terminal; or being new to linux still how to even change the permissions in the terminal back to me.

2.  I can burn to DVD on the laptop, so I am at least able to backup that way for now (and they verified from SHA-256 after burn).  If that finalized the DVD then that downgrades the urgency of this for me for now.
Don't worry about artificial intelligence.  Worry about natural stupidity.  :)

Hi, all,

Sorry for the embarrassing opening statement as I have worked in IT support for many years...

...but I failed to note the exact error at the time it occurred...

I know.  I know.

Mounting a Kingston DataTraveller G4 16Gb USB stick it appeared to mount, but on attempting to copy a .tar.gz archive from my HD reported a permissions error.  The drive had worked yesterday in initial testing.

I had had this problem before when trying out Ubuntu-Unity, but thought it might either be a bug in that distro's file handler (Nautilus?) or else something happening after I tried using a different USB stick first (which also didn't work properly).

The Kingston USB drive was sold as compatible with Linux by my local computer store, who also couldn't resolve the problem.

The syslog file reports the following (the subsequent corruption was possibly due to me physically removing the drive after cancelling the copy attempt in Thunar, at which point it disappeared from the list of attached drives).  Syslog below my sign-off.

Any help will be greatly appreciated as this is (again) blocking my ability to backup data.

Thanks,
Ian
