Overheating hard drives hddtemp, data loss

If me. I'd unplug the drives and check connectors for dirt or looseness first. But I do not think that might be the problem here.
I have been picking up free computers from my local city hall IT support tech who is upgrading the city offices.

I have seen all kinds of wrong unusual things with these computers. So far I have accomplished getting 3 out of 5 fully functional,
with the Dell T3400 purring like a kitten.

From dirt to loose connections to pulling cpus, hard drives, ram, and power supply connectors.
It took some elbow grease to tune these up right.

Since you are the only one dealing with this issue on multiple computers.
I'd actually start wondering about the transformer to outlet electrical consistency.

MY place is 3 phase. When the fuse on the pole broke for one of my phase feeds to my place.
My central A/C units compressors ran hot as hell and shut down. I scratched my head till
I broke out my multi-meter.

Heat electrically is attributed to loose connections or no connection according to ohms law or resistence.
You might have to start looking outside of the computer room maybe.

Hdd= 53 C    Core 1= 55 Core2= 57  CPU 2% usage as I write this "on my lap". Fan intermittent.

Hello!

Even if your drives are being constantly accessed, they shouldn't be 100C/212F hot. At that point, you could use it like a hot plate, to keep your beverages warm.

Have you compared other distros, or Windows, to see whether or not they also do this? Here, my systems, HDs, and SSDs all run at roughly the same temperature - whether I use Windows or LL.
 
Since three different 'puters are all affected, if they're all plugged into different circuits, I'd check my AC line voltage. It could be too high or low, - usually the latter...

No problems here in the desert where I run kernels from 4.0 to 3.13. On different gear. SSD, Pata, and Sata. Local temps higher than others here on this forum.
Summer is 115F on the average.

Edit: in fact. If it is cold. That is when my drives may not spin up and load the kernel on  boot. Wait a few hours. Then OK.

If interested. I can post my conky line for hard drive activity that shows what is going on with my drives.

Hi,

I have checked 5 PC's
My ambient room temp is 21c
1 Laptop, SSD 32c, 3 home built mini PC's have disk temps of 29~33c, SSD/HD's

I have 1 pico-itx PC LL2.4, running BOINC > Milkway@Home
The CPU is running at 100% 24/7
CPU Temp 53-57c, disk(SSD) temp 54C

I'm not saying this a LL problem but I was wondering if others have been experiencing overheating hard drives.
I have 3 hard drives on 3 machines all overheating and causing data loss all within days of each other, 2 desktops 1 laptop. (possibly one more hard drive)
I check my system RAM, smartdrive fairly often

is reporting recently my hard drives are reaching high values 79c, 97c 100c !
and yes my desktop SATA drive was hot enough to burn fingers

I wonder if there is a  bug in kernel  3.13
and has anyone else has seen anything.

I've been monitoring
sudo hddtemp /dev/sda
but am hoping to log temps, and have alerts in case of over heating.
