I don't know what the problem is with that.  If you want to go back to 2.8, that's cool, here are two options.

Option 1:  Using Systemback, create a Live ISO of your machine that is successfully running 2.8 and install that onto your machine with the SSD.  This assumes your 2.8 machine is the same in bit architecture as the SSD machine, meaning they're both 64-bit or 32-bit.  More information on Systemback can be found in the Help Manual (https://www.linuxliteos.com/manual/index.html) under the Tutorials section.

Option 2:  A clean install of Linux Lite 2.8, with caveats.
The kernel that shipped with 2.8 is now unsupported.  I would suggest you install 2.6 and Lite Upgrade to 2.8.  Then you'd be on a kernel that is supported for the duration of 2.8, which is until April 2019 by the way.

The thing to look out for after installing 2.6 is you'll run into the Google Chrome issue, and you'll need to run the fix for it in order to Install Updates.  That can be seen here:  https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/installing-software/fix-for-google-chrome-on-linux-lite/.  That issue will affect you whether you've installed Google Chrome or not.

When all of that is done, to get your kernel to the latest security update, run in a terminal:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install linux-generic
You'll want to run that command every so often in the 2.x series.  Like monthly.  You don't need to in the 3.x series.  There, it is done as a part of Install Updates.

I installed it now, and reboot. There was no change. As for the Sound section, volume control is not accessible but, as before, it gets stuck at "Establishing connection".

Have you installed Restricted Extras via Lite Software?  After that, it would be worth looking at the Sound section of the Help Manual.

Alright, 3.2 is installed now. While the sound worked on the live version, it doesn't work now that it's installed.

You haven't done what I suggested yet, which was to install Linux Lite 3.2 if everything worked okay in the Live session.  I didn't mention other ideas on purpose.

I'll have to try that. Would be a shame to have bought the ssd for nought.

Today is a new day. I accidentally left this laptop on during the night (standing on a plastic bag), it welcomed me with fans, something I hadn't heard since I removed Windows (7) from this computer. I turned it off, then on again after a few minutes and it still gives the occasional fan spurts. Fine... Youtube seems to work better: video plays, but there's no sound. Volume Control is inaccessible, it gets stuck at "Establishing connection to PulseAudio". Very strange indeed. I will have to make sure I didn't fudge something up with the speakers when I changed storage unit (gotta open up the entire computer to access storage).

Aaanyway. For reference my main machine, a desktop, runs 2.8 from an ssd with no (real) problems. What are some of your other ideas, torreydale?

EDIT-- Currently on 3.2 live usb, everything seems to be working fine. I will hold off on installing it till I see what else torreydale has to say.

EDIT2: Silly me. The startup jingle works, so naturally the sound works (on the 2.8 installation) as well, just not on youtube. Also did another experiment with videos. Stuck a usb with videos into the computer. Directory opened as per usual, but when opening files, nothing happens (and usb doesn't blink). Menu->VLC doesn't work either. Very strange. Reinstall os maybe...

I have several ideas, but my initial impression is for you to just boot to the Live version of Linux Lite 3.2.  If YouTube works fine there, then proceed with installing Linux Lite 3.2.  Make sure you check the MD5sum of your downloaded *.iso image file.

Sorry if this is in the wrong subforum, but...

I have been using LL 2.8 on my old Dell: Core i5 2450M, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 500GB hdd. It's been working fine but I felt like upgrading to an ssd. So, I bought an ssd (Kingston 120GB), installed that, and installed LL 2.8 again, no problems there. Here's what's happened:

- startup time improved, as expected
- shutdown is possibly slower. Clicking shut down evokes no reaction, then shutdown begins 30 sec later, and the computer shuts down fast.
- chromium (which I had been using prior to ssd installation) took 30 sec to start.

Another more serious quirk is with youtube - it doesn't work at all. If the video loads at all, there is no sound. Figured I'd try using the awful Firefox browser, same result. Installed Chrome, same result. What is happening? Putting the hdd back seems very attractive right now.
