Title: Help - SONY DVD RW DW-Q28A linux drivers
Post by: Coastie on April 05, 2014, 12:50:26 PM
Tried to burn and read CD but Xfburn says the drive is empty with CD in it. DVD burn/read works. Called shop where I bought burner. Told a driver(s) problem. Told to check in config files to see if there is a line with a question mark. Don't know how to find. Also told just do a Google search for the drivers and download and install. Did but was unsure which site would be save to use and Firefox wanted to open with CD burner.

Help!

Sounds like the advice they gave you was for windows, you won't need 'linux drivers' for a cd drive.
It's reading dvd's fine so see if you can get your hands on another brand of blank cd and test it.

The DVD part is both reading and burning. The problem is with the CD part. It does not recognize there is a CD in it either to read (play) professional recorded CDs or burn.

The shop set the jumpers. I plugged the ribbon into the board at home. There was an extra wire with a connector coming from the burner that was not on the CD player it replaced. I found no where to connect it.The shop said it was an audio connector that I did not need to connect.

Hello!

If you still some kind of Windows box to test it on, try that, but it's starting to sound like the drive itself might be defective. It's rare that the CD-RW part of a DVD is defective, but not impossible.

Now I HAVE seen CD/DVD drives fail they other way around - CDs play and burn fine, but DVDs won't read or burn. Mine are like that, but the PC is a Gateway, and the front of the drives are curved - otherwise, I'd replace them.

Fortunately, I have a Sony external that works like a champ. It even lets you hook up an analog/digital camera or VCR and burns things on a DVD...

No windows box. Might take it into the shop that sold it to me Monday. Want to be sure it is the burner before I buy another one. Probably get an internal to be sure computer will boot from it.

Hello!

Most every PC made in the last ten years will boot from a USB CD-ROM or flash drive. If I can find similar units that WORK for the Gateway, I'll buy them.

The ones I have had belts that had stretched. I cut them down, glued them back together, and reassembled the drives, but they still don't want to work right.

For REALLY old machines, a utility called Plop Boot Manager can be burned only a floppy or CD to boot from USB. I have an ancient Dell Latitude laptop that requires Plop to boot from USB...
