Title: More free games
Post by: FOM on February 27, 2016, 02:10:46 AM
Looking for an additional selection of free games for this low powered system. I downloaded the games from the 'lite software' option. They are nice, but I'm hoping there is a lot more somewhere. Perhaps some older legacy games that would have some action and would have been made to work on this system. Even PacMan would help.https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/Smileys/default/smiley.gif (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/Smileys/default/smiley.gif)
Thanks
Jerry

On my IBM T23 with a P3 cpu and 1 gig of ram.

I install DosBox.

I download and unzip these in a directory/folder I name games

After I unzip the game. My default run action for the .exe in the game is dosbox. I set that manually.

That is how I roll on low spec gear. Like a 15 year old laptop.

Hi rokytnji, That is a good tip. Lots of free games. I tried MsPacpc, but had problems. I need to understand your instructions. When you write "I install DosBox." Does that mean there something (an app?) called DosBox to install? I didn't find such an app. Probably you mean you install DosBox games. I downloaded mspacpc.zip to the Archive Manager and clicked extract. I moved all the files to a games folder I created and clicked the .exe file and got the message 'an error occurred while loading the archive'. I'm not sure what you mean when you write "My default run action for the .exe in the game is dosbox. I set that manually." Would appreciate any help doing this.
PS-I downloaded a second time and saved the zip file to the Downloads folder and from there extracted to the emptied Games folder with the same error result. Maybe it's just something wrong with the game.
Thanks again
Jerry

1st. Update your system by using Menu>Install Updates . Let it finish before moving to my next step.

Open Synaptic

Type dosbox in search box

Install dosbox by left click on the apply check mark on the taskbar

Now open Thnar file Manager. Right  Click on a empty space and pick create new folder

OK. Making this how to. I did not know/pay attention that the pacman I downloaded which I call miss_pacman which is free ware from here

http://www.dosgamesarchive.com/download/ms-pac-pc/

did have a folder to keep all the Windows stuff in. So my next steps arwe on the fly so to speak because I extracted my download and made my folder afterwards and dragged and dropped all the loose Windows bits into ~/Games one at a time. But I will tell you a better way than that.

So. Left click the zip download link and set it up like so with extract while in your browser.

Next window that opens will ask where to extract to

See that button on the top r/h corner called create folder. Use that to make a new folder to download everything in the next step I show to. Make sure you are inside of that new folder before using my next step. I call mine "miss_pacaman"
Just for easy recognition.

OK you are done making the new folder. You should be inside of it before doing the below

Now you should get a extracted succesfully pop up/ I picked show the files button to open thunar file manager next

Now to make dosbox the default run action for dosgames .exe you download later adding to your girls list. I hope my screenshot explains it easily. The open with other application button is what you want to hit to get the next window.

Now that you are done. Find the .exe in pacman and left click on it. You can start setting your game play from there

Hey, rokytnji.  I've used dosbox for other stuff, but never vintage games.  Many thanks for the links!

I installed Digger this afternoon and it runs just fine on my Gateway LT40 notebook with an Atom N2600 processor.  I put the mount ~/dosprogs and c: commands in the dosbox configuration file (at the bottom) and changed the defaults so it would run with a larger (2x) window than the default.  I then created a desktop file that executes "dosbox -c digger" so I can run from the menu.

I'll be adding Ms Pacman PC later this evening.  Appreciate your information.

Cheers,
Andy N1KSN

Wow rokytnji! I thank you mightily for a thorough and comprehensive answer. I did as suggested and VOILA, mspacman came alive and I became immersed in play. I'll be checking out other games soon.
Thank you again.
Jerry :)

I found this source for Linux games. What do you think?
http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/best-free-software-linux.htm

I'm tempted to try this one.  Is this wise on my system?  I didn't find any system requirements, though on their forum a few people spoke of using old Dell xp machines and even windows 98.

FOM  , hi , I'm wondering  if you ever tried  out Smoking Guns.  I've  been all over the  place  and found a lot of old references  to this game and tried different things , ie . - installed  ioquake3  and several other associated  apps, files etc. but haven't managed to get everything I need .  I 'm not sure  but I think I was able to get  these 2 files    ( pak1.pk3 )  but don't know how to integrate them with ioquake 3  or quake 3  both of which  show installed  in synaptic - I just don't know how to install  pak1. and pk3   . When I open quake 3  from my menu  it gives  this-

Use game-data-packager to build and install the quake3-data package.
You will need these two files:

--------------- baseq3/pak0.pk3

From a Quake III Arena CD-ROM or installation

size: 479493658 bytes
md5sum: 1197ca3df1e65f3c380f8abc10ca43bf
sha1sum: 9d588ea65e92944d3e23eeb6ec08f1dd666f4658

--------------- linuxq3apoint-1.32b-3.x86.run

From any mirror of ftp.idsoftware.com, Gentoo or FreeBSD: for instance try
http://www.filewatcher.com/m/linuxq3apoint-1.32b-3.x86.run.30923961.0.0.html

size: 30923961 bytes

in a window - I think the  pak1. and pk3 files I have  would satisfy  quake 3 - but I'm not  sure .   Can you shed any light on this for me ?   I'm not sure if  these apps are still  being  used .

                    thanks a lot
