Title: [SOLVED] Gaming on Wine
Post by: ohjrson on March 04, 2014, 03:41:29 PM
Just wanted to get some information on Wine. Is that the best one to use for windows based games or is there something else that works better. I seem to have issues getting some games to work.

Running windows games in linux is not 100% perfect. At the end of the day, getting one thing to work from one operating system to another is extremely difficult. Up until now the Wine team have made a miraculous effort to get this far.

The first thing you should do is check to see how well your game is supported in linux, and under what version of Wine. Check their database of games and wine versions here - http://appdb.winehq.org/ A platinum rating suggests the game or application runs well with little to no problems, whilst a Bronze rating means the program has little chance of running or runs poorly. Start with this database and I'm sure other members will chime in with some good advice to. Wine can be a minefield, keep your expectations low and realistic. Of course, we'd prefer you to choose only linux games, but that is another thread :)

You can also try gaming in VirtualBox, though I doubt it will work, if at all.

Yeah tried that and all it would do was crash.....bummer

But thanks... Does anyone know how to get a specific program to work though? I have One Touch software for windows but I have tried to make it work in Wine and I guess I don't know what I am doing. Any suggestions?

BTW Valtam, this Linux Lite is truly awesome...I love it....Thanks

If that program isn't graphically intensive, it would run fine under VirtualBox. Wine can sometimes be a pain to diagnose, but when it works, it is great!

Hello!

The best way to describe PlayOnLinux is that it is a GUI 'front end' for WINE. It is supposed to make Windows apps and games that it supports easier to install.

I've tried it out and played with it for a while. I wasn't impressed by it, so I deleted it. As always, YMMV...
