Title: Wallpaper Limits?? XFCE desktop manager.
Post by: PCTECH on April 18, 2018, 03:53:25 PM
Hello

I ran into an interesting issue when adding new pictures to the wallpapers folder recently. When I would open the XFCE desktop settings manager to change the backgrounds, it would not load any images, even after waiting a few minutes. If clicked the red X to close the window...I would get the "window is busy. do wish to close anyway" message. I can also close it via Task Manager. When I removed the added pictures from the wallpapers folder "all was well again" My question, is there a limit to the amount of pictures that can be located in the wallpapers folder? Can you "overload" the XFCE desktop settings manager?

Thanks
Mark

Permissions are probably hung up. How did you add the images? Can only add to /usr/share/backgrounds/xfce4 as administrator, also .png performs faster than .jpg. Your /home/pictures/ folder may or may not populate quickly if there are too many big files, but if it populates in Thunar it will populate desktop settings. You don't specify which you are using.

I have 663 items in my Wallpapers folder.  So I can safely claim there is no limit up to that number.

Hey

I'm adding the pictures to Home/Wallpapers...either by dragging them there or copying and pasting. Thunar will open the folder without and populate it without any issues. It just seems to be an issue with the XFCE desktop settings manager. I created another folder Home/Pictures/Wallpapers2 and copied the pictures there as a test. desktop manager worked fine with that.

Hi there,

Well, there could be a limitation in the manager itself. Or something broken in the XFCE installation... even a possible conflit in the XFCE installation Vs Kernel Vs hardware.
Seems this part can have some troubles sometimes since, for example, in Manjaro Linux 16.02 I think , just opening the Wallpaper folder crashed the window.

Maybe some Wise Linux Gurus in these parts can shed some light on this obscure situation.

Cheers!

Either put them in ~/Pictures/somefoldername/, or just ~/Pictures/   or as administrator add them to /usr/share/backgrounds/xfce4/ where the default wallpapers are. Don't put them in ~/Wallpapers as this can generate a user permission file loop for the desktop manager looking for web files and trying to open them with firefox.

Might be worth flushing ~/.cache/thumbnails/large   which contain wallpaper t/nails??
