Title: Move Tabs on Taskbar
Post by: thedoor on June 20, 2021, 02:32:46 PM
So far I haven't found a way to move tabs on my taskbar, like I can in other Ubuntu-related distros. And doing a search here for Taskbar hasn't led me to any info on this query, unless I've missed seeing it.

When I drag a tab on the taskbar, to reposition it elsewhere on the taskbar, I see a hand/arrow icon, indicating that the system is aware that I want to move the tab, but it won't drop the tab in the new position when I release it.

If the system has been programmed to recognize that activity, it seems that it would have also already implemented that capability. Somebody was obviously intending to do that or they wouldn't have implemented that much of that process. Maybe someone just forgot to implement that functionality. If so, please implement it soon, if you can.

Am I missing something here?

Right-click on an icon, select "Move," then put it where you wish.

Right-click on an icon, select "Move," then put it where you wish.

That only moves a given window on the desktop.

@thedoor

Which tabs specifically?
The entire taskbar location from the bottom?
Or say the far right, time/date piece or something else???

Right click on the panel. Select panel> then panel preferences > then Items to see panel setup and spaces. Use up down arrows to move items and plus minus to add or delete items.

What I refer to, and I believe thedoor does as well, are the open applications on the taskbar such as browser, email, terminal and file manager.

The drag and drop function you are seeing is to move an open app from one desktop to another. Desktops are located to the right next to the updater in the taskbar. Default is two but you can add more.

What is it exactly you want to do? Move where?

Re-arrange the tabs on the taskbar, like I can do with the tabs in Firefox.

Have you made any changes to panel's default settings?

Yes. I like to drag open applications on my taskbar to other places on the taskbar. I've been able to do that in many other Ubuntu-based distros. Since I see a hand/arrow appear when I attempt to drag an app to another taskbar place, I figured that the system was aware of what I was wanting to do and would accommodate me. But it doesn't. Seems like we're half way there, but nobody's listening. If other distros can do it, the best one ought to be able to do it too.

This is not a distro feature, but a desktop environment feature, you can't do that in Gnome since there's no "taskbar" there, at least not without installing a gnome extension providing such a feature, so it won't matter which distro Gnome is running on, the feature isn't just available. In XFCE, you can swap the icons/windows' tabs from minimized apps to panel. Could it be that you're trying to do something that XFCE can't do?

As I've already said the "hand" drag and drop indication appears because you can drag the application to another desktop.

I don't think that's what he wants to do, but to move/swap windows minimized to panel within the panel, which as far as I know is possible, but it would appear that he also wants to move them to a random place within the panel.

OK. Then try >Panel >Panel Preferences >Items >Window Buttons >Sorting order >select >none allow drag and drop. That should do it.

Yes it does. Just tested it.

I'm accustomed to being able to move open apps on the taskbar to other locations. I like to have open apps in a familiar order every day. Since I've been able to do that in other distros, and since I saw the cursor change when I tried to drag a running app to another location on the taskbar, it seemed to me that I ought to be able to do that here, since it seemed to be built-in, since the cursor was changing. But apparently that's not the case. I was hopeful, but no cigar, I guess.

Thanks, everyone, for your responses and information. Resolved, but not for my purposes.

It's not the default setting but it is provided for in XFCE and as I said it's in the >Window Buttons>Sorting Order setting drop down menu as >none allow drag and drop. Which applications you prefer to have open automatically after booting can be set in >Session and Startup> by saving your session with your chosen applications started,  or adding them to ~/user/.config/autostart/ with a [Desktop Entry] script.
