Title: How to install fonts in LL so that my other users can see & use them too?
Post by: Vera on November 25, 2018, 09:01:11 AM
I installed some additional fonts I wanted to use in my LL4.0 machine. I did this as shown in the pic below. I just pressed the "Install" button on the font, and voila! - the font was installed and I could use it.

But, only *I* can use these fonts. I've set up my machine as multi-user, with my account being the main/admin account, and have two additional users who are family members. The problem is that they cannot see the new fonts.

My question is, how should I have installed these fonts to ensure the other users can access them too? Is there a way to fix the problem for the fonts I already installed today?

I believe once they are installed just use cp comand to copy them to the /usr/local/share/fonts/ directory. You can copy from downloads if you save there or from ~/.local/share/fonts/ directory since they are already installed. Read the system wide instructions from the Ubuntu link below. I'll go check the file tree in LL and see if this correct. You may have to reboot after, and/or update LibreOffice fonts. I'll get back to you shortly.

Yep it is different in LL. Copy fonts with sudo cp to a /usr/share/fonts/truetype/newfontdirectory/ directory as long as it is a ttf font. Create a directory first with the font name in the /truetype/ directory or copy the font to the /litefonts/ directory instead. Someone else may have an easier suggestion here, and I am not completely clear on how the /litefonts/ directory may or may not integrate with LibreOffice.

If your looking for other additional fonts... You can also use... Lite Fonts

Just an FYI - Trinidad is probably on par for the solution...But perhaps it'll shed a little light..??..

Awesome!! Thanks so much @trinidad and @firenice03 .

I did what Trinidad said, and it worked 100%  ;D 8) I put the TrueType fonts into /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ as admin user (I did this via file manager GUI under "open as administrator" via drag-and-drop, and... it worked! My other users could access them on their system and in LibreOffice! Thanks, Trinidad.

I had one font that was .otf format only, which was opentype, so I put that one into /usr/share/fonts/opentype/ and it worked too, the other users could get them on the system and in LibreOffice.

Trinidad's method also turned out to be a lot faster when dealing with 8 fonts at once (which I was), than opening up each font and pressing "install".

Thanks also for the input Firenice, I had no idea about Lite Fonts and was glad to hear about them. The fonts I am installing are not related to those, but it's still good to know. Thanks for taking the time to help.

Wow! My family and I are thrilled with the ability to access these new fonts! Thanks everyone.
