Hello, everyone!
My name is Şerban Stănescu, I am from România, Alexandria, Teleorman County.
I am a daily Linux user since 2012 and I do all kinds of tasks on Linux, mostly content creation tasks (writing books, creating graphics, music and video).
My "industry" -- so to speak -- is Personal Development and I use a computer to enhance my possibilities (courses, meetings, graphics, presentations, videos, etc.). I have some 25 years of daily practice, on various Windows versions and last eight years, entirely on Linux.
I've been on Linux Mint since 2012 till 2018 when I switched to Linux Lite and I have to say I am super-pleased.
Linux Lite, is among the extremely few distributions capable of allowing one to create an ECOSYSTEM.
Actually I know only two other distros capable of creating an ECOSYSTEM: Manjaro and Redcore.
All the rest, are simply dedicated distros.
With those being said, I guess you can figure out a few things about me and what am I interested in.

I must also say you're amazing with what you do!
I started using Linux back in 1997. From time to time.
Since Red Hat 4.2, It became somwhat "regular" dual-boot.
Since July 2012, it became the daily basis OS. And THE ONLY ONE.
Then I discovered Linux Lite and as far as I can see, it's top 3 Linux distros.
Why?
There are ONLY three distros capable of generating an ECOSYSTEM:
1. Linux Lite (NEVER Ubuntu!)
2. Manjaro (NEVER Arch!)
3. Redcore (NEVER Gentoo!)
All other distros, including "Father/Mother" ones, fail to deliver this particular ability!
So, I am deeply grateful for your VISION and dedication to this VISION!

Very interesting, but what is an Ecosystem, in computer terms?

Hi!
It's very much like in the current acception of the term:
A way of making work together seamlessly all the software pieces of a computer:
The Core Os;
The Desktop Environnement;
The Window Manager;
The set of User Applications.

The last item is the taughest task of an OS. Coping very well with all the "whistles and bells" of an User.
In order to be able to do this, the OS has to be very tolerant to a custom set of applications and that might mean working very well with some 1,000 - 1,500 Apps, at least, regardless the combination of Apps.
It's very much like you have a Mercedes and it's so smart than it can use any spare parts from Ferrari, Lancia, Volvo, Volkswagen, Opel, Fiat, Nissan, Toyota, Honda, etc.
While with Linux Lite this is possible, with it's "Father", Ubuntu, I'd better pass the offer...
The caveeat of this though, is that the User (me, for one) has to have enough practice and patience, to figure out at least the basics of how the Linux "wheels spin". And this might take more than one year of daily work.
Most people, give up a distro after some 2 - 6 weeks. This is way too short to understand anything, supposing you understand something.
That's why people do distro hopping and care for backgrounds and animations. Takes too much to do a fine tunning. Better wait for the next version, than next, than next... Do you see the pattern here? Does it ring a bell?

Ah, I see. I have been one of those distro hoppers you mention, Serban. After trying around 20 or so distros, I have not found one better than Linux Lite. they almost need to change the name, it doesn't behave like a "light" system at all, except that old hardware does run very well on it (which is great for my 11 year old desktop). It seems put together more solidly than others. Very stable and reliable. Perhaps tightly coded? but that's beyond my expertise.

As for Ubuntu, we must give respect where it is due. It has been the most important Linux distro ever, both in its own sake, as well of course for the many excellent distros it has spawned. and their forum is worth frequenting daily for the accumulated wisdom there. I have found answers there to problems that I just couldn't find anywhere else. I lost interest after 16.04, when they left Unity and went to Gnome 3. I guess they caved to the many users who detested Unity. I thought it was pretty cool, actually.

Now, despite my deep love for Linux, I have to say that Linux Lite is my best choice too.
Maybe because it is aimed towards people like me, without any "PRO" aspirations for say "Top-notch programmer" or "Admin of the year" or anything like.
Nothing against any distro, though. It's simply that I like Lite more than others. It's my opinion and wether I'm wrong or right, it still remains my opinion, nothing more.
I said it many times, regarding the endless debate "Which is the best...". Whatever we're speaking of, be it distro, DE, WM, the best one, is the one that SUITS YOUR NEEDS. And this has nothing to do with a particular OS, distro, or any other kind of software or even hardware.
Maybe, one "thumbs up" might be that it states that it runs on 500 MB RAM and it really does exactly that. The slowest CPU I used Linux Lite on, was a Celeron 1600 (single core) low cache 2, DDR1. And it worked. So... What might be debatable here? Obviously, without bad intentions, because if you want to break down anything, you surely can do this, and it matters nothing what ever one wants to destroy.
So, again, speaking in good faith, Linux Lite is above my expectations, well enough to keep me tight!
Are there any better choices?
Again, depends on a ton of factors what answer would fit into this question.
The most ignored factor although, is... WHAT DO YOU KNOW TO DO WITH THIS OS?
While serviceing computers, I ask people who seek buying recommendations: WHAT DO YOU KNOW TO DO WITH THIS COMPUTER? Otherwise, why spent tons of $$$$$$$ for a toy that in 6 or maybe 12 months from now, will fall down 50% of the initial price?
The same for any piece of software. Pick the simplest, learn the basics then, if this the case, go for the next level.
Otherwise, it's a waste of resources.

Hi, and welcome!

Take a look again. You missed something: it's 16 (sixteen) GB of RAM and a quadcore 8 thread CPU.
Besides, I have 8 years of daily work only on Linux so, I had some time to learn to make my machines go smooth.

I also saw your system so you're right, it works fine. I have also a Lenovo T400 a close config to yours, and I'm pleased with LL 5.0 on that too. Maybe my CPU is a bit better than the AMD (Core2 Duo @2,53 GHz), but still, close.

I hope you'll be happy with Linux Lite! (I am! )
