Sylpheed. Simple, tried and tested, reliable.
Interesting to see some suggestions which I have not tried yet, maybe I'll explore some time.

I love using Evolution on LL, I have it on 2 LL computers, it syncs very well between both. It has an excellent calendar - I use it for my own private use, i.e. I'm not organizing events for a group etc., but I haven't heard that it would not work in such a situation.

Evolution has an excellent data back-up which takes just a few minutes.

Evolution is Linux only, so some people prefer, for example, Thunderbird, which works on other OSs as well.

Like in most things, we will all have our preferences, long may it be so.
Seamonkey is a combination of E-mail client with Browser and Chat apps.  It's very much like Thunderbird and Firefox put together and fully integrated (in fact Seamonkey was a Mozilla project until very recently).  It does everything T-Bird and Firefox do, yet has thousands fewer lines of code than Firefox!
