I am reasonably new to linux.
I installed Linux lite 3.8 on my Toshiba.
When I try to shut down, it been won't shut down the whole way. It ends up on a black screen, leaving me to hold down the power button.
I have been searching for similar issue. I have tried a couple of things, like asking the computer to shut down via the command line - that didn't work. Also, elsewhere I saw that one person pressed enter at the black screen to close it - that didn't work either.
I have also seen that some graphics cards cause issues, especially amd but mine is not amd.

Would really appreciate any help at all :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\
Are you dual booting with Windows 8?
In any case make sure you have fast boot turned off in the BIOS, and/or choose the slowest SSE setting if you are SATA HDD.

Hi
Not I am not dual booting, I installed lite and replaced Windows 10.
Fast boot is switched off yes.  I will check out the SSE setting and let you know if I have success.

Ok I went into Bios and there was an option to run the HDD on a slower setting (to conserve battery power) so I changed to that and booted.  Then I done a shutdown and it made no difference.

Maybe a setting in Power Manager needs changed?
What command did you use in the terminal?
I did have a look in power manager, but everything seems fine, unless you know something specific I need to check?

As for the command line, I don't remember off the top of head. Are there different ones I can try?

Thanks
Try turning off your network connection before shutting down.

TC
turning off connection didn't work .  Is there anywhere I might be able to see a log of events and perhaps see an error for what is happening?
Not sure what model laptop..
Couple things to try...

Unplug and remove battery - press hold power button.. Full discharge then put battery back in and try again..

If a non removal battery - Unplug power, check on bottom - there maybe a "pin hole" to allow reset.
