been a few years and now gaming needs are higher. i have a HD4850 radeon but is there a source of drivers i can use?. i have seen references to "open source" drivers but i fail to see where or how. thanks, confused

Are you using LL 3.6? Unfortunately, there are no AMD propietary drivers for Ubuntu 16.04. I have an AMD GPU too, HD6750 and am using Padoka PPA which offers the latest Mesa code. You can read about it here https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n...-Ubuntu-16
That article/post has some benchmarks the author performed while using this PPA. I can't tell anything about gaming performance cause I haven't installed any game since the only one I like is Pro Evolution Soccer and I did try with wine but failed everytime, it's supposed to work according to what I've read but guess I'm missing something. Sad

Yeah, your propbably going to have to do this via Deb. 4000 series needs the legacy drivers (fglrx-legacy-driver (8.97.100.7-3~bpo70+1)
