...why does Microsoft have to be so hostile to another operating system like Linux.
I wouldn't need any other reason to switch to Linux full time having realized that important statement.

BINGO! Although it's been quite a while now, when I made the decision to go 100% Linux, there were still some Windows apps I really liked. I just bit the bullet and started looking for Linux apps that would at least do the same thing, even though I had to learn new things. Took me a while to get over that little hump, but I've never looked back. Games were the least of my worries when making an important decision like settling in with an operating system that was faster, more stable, and FREE!
When dual booting with Windows 10 using Legacy, Windows 10 must be the first system that grub boots. Often Windows updates needs to restart your computer. This ruined boot you have is repairable fairly quickly running fsck manually as I explained. We are all Linux people here and it is not difficult to setup your grub boot order to boot Windows first. I am not defending Windows here. It's just the way things are if you want to dual boot. There is nothing wrong with setting up root on your Linux system either and there are some advantages to doing so, i/e being able to make system reapirs, or boot changes easily with another Linux system on your HDD, or even a live syatem. Things are kept simple here for new Linux users. Most of this information is readliy availble on the Ubuntu forums. I too find MS practices deplorable at times, but I am in the US, and the majority of business here runs MS, and in fact if you own your Windows system, or have admininstrative privileges on your Windows system you can do any damn thing you want to it using your Linux system. MS is hostile as you say, perhaps, but the best way to deal with that is to learn as much Linux as you can.

No need of rescue disc. Just press 'ctrl+D' and it ask root password. Then run 'fsck -f'. Only thing is 50% chance

If you are using an Ubuntu rescue disk to repair a grub ruined by Windows update restart the odds are ususally about 100%. Most of the file errors are orphans. Just answer yes.
