Apologies for posting this here.  Not sure where else to post
  A popup of pettocus.info has started doing the rounds on android phones.It appears to be a redirecting malware.  It gave a false virus infection warning requiring immediate updating of android.  If this link was clicked presume some code was downloaded to the phones phishing etc.
In a family members case, it is unlikely that the phone has been previously backed up  so all  stored data address books photos etc are only on the phone and would be st if doing a factory had reset so.

QUESTION.  If the phone date is now backed up to an externally plugged in hard drive or usb of sufficient space. and then the backed up data were to be scanned on my LL laptop, what could/should I use to vigorously scan it to ensure it is clean and will not recontaminate a freshly reset phone?

Thank you bitsnpcs. Understand that the outlined procedure will get rid of the redirect on the browsers on the phone.  Concerned about what else it might have downloaded malware wise to the phone - phishing  etc.
Therefore would like to factory reset.  However unsure whether any stored data (personal - files pictures address books etc) might have become infected in some way , and therefore reloading that personal data on to a "freshly" rest phone would only reinfect the phone.

Therefore asking what is the best program to scan the data  backed up to an external linux pc.?  Would such software be able to detect malware that was meant for an android phone??

If me. If I know the name of offending files on my phone.

I can use the use locate command after


Find where they are are located in my phones file system. Then manually delete them my self. Using the file manager as root or via command line with rm.

Anyhows. That is how I keep my wifes and my phone pretty clean.

you can back up to Google Drive and Google Photos, click sync, it will virus scan the files.
Disconnect wifi and internet data, wipe phone, if you do not disconnect from internet it will wipe from the Google drive and photos when you delete from the phone, it will resync and the files will come back to the phone, if not you can click by selecting all of them and then click sync, if it won't work you can select them and download to device, to restore them.
Check it first before wiping, with a file to be sure.

Or dropbox if it scans uploaded files and then back to the Linux folder from it ?

On Android phone you can use Malwarebytes app
