The good news is that this has now become available as the following .deb package package:
fluxgui - 1.1.9~20160808-g4125e70-1~xenial

I tried it and it works excellently.  They have updated some parts of it, e.g. they've included more choices of colour temperatures down to 1700K, so I'm now typing this to the colour temperature of a burning match...

Thanks for the update, Mike!

As mentioned in the quoted thread and for those still on the LL 2.x series and/or preferring software included in the repositories I can recommend gtk-redshift. If the system also gets used offline you need to create a config file that includes the geo location. Via the config file it's also easy to adjust the color temperatures to your liking.
