There is more but that is most all of it. The PC is a Fujitsu Amilo 1703 (AMD 64), and is running Lite 2.8. Can anyone give me any pointers as to what might be the cause of the problem?

You're probably going to have to zero this drive and start over. It's probably has/had a bad sector for a while, and used up all the reallocation space.

Hi Tim
In addition to trinidad's advice:
Each single hard drive will die at some stage. It's only a question when.
Hope that helps
In addition to trinidad's advice:
- Backup your data!

- Run a health test on your hard drive.
Hope that helps

Ran the badblock utility and it threw up almost 4000 errors, :-\ All clear for the first 14 g/b then error after error in consecutively numbered blocks of four. Looks as though the HDD is well on its way out. I can't complain cos I acquired this laptop off of my partner when she decided it was too big and decided to treat herself to a new notebook a few years back. Not the most powerful machine I have, but has been a useful spare laptop for lesser duties.
Will be loading Lite on the replacement. Deffo the best of the lightweight distro's for general purpose use and I must have tried most all of them by now.
Thanks for the heads up....
