I installed LL3.0 on the second hand Lenovo B50-30 i bought yday.

In the BIOS i did set the boot mode to Legacy Support and Boot Priority to Legacy First.
There was also a option called OS optimized defaults, it had 2 options to choose from, Other OS and Win8 64bit..i set it to other os..LL3.0 is other os and not win8

Now i have 2 problems which are similar.
1. When i shut the laptop down it doesnt shut down all the way, i get as far as a black screen with power button and num lock light on, then it just sits there. I have to force close it to shut it completely down.

2. When i choose to restart laptop it dos the same as when i want to shut it down, it doesnt restart, just sits there with the power button light and the numlock light on and a black screen. I then have to manually force close it to be able to restart the laptop.

It starts up withou a problem and as far as i can tell all works without a problem. Just the shut down and restart that isnt working as it should be.
Hi,

Sounds like this problem.... Check your BIOS Version
My bios version is 2.04
So a 1st step is to upgrade to latest v2.11.??
I could only find a Windows based BIOS update tool...

Check in the BIOS to see if there is option within the BIOS to update
Lenovo may have a .img file for the BIOS
I always update to the latest BIOS version when buying second hand computers. It's a good base to troubleshoot from.
I checked the BIOS and couldnt find a update option in there. I dont have a clue about BIOS, mostly i stay away from it. Only thing i can is change bot options. Dont have windows running on laptop at the moment. I could install the drive that came with it, that has windows 10 on it.

But can i update bios and put back ssd with LL on it and just us it without the need to reinstall LL?

Strange thing is. When i change quiet splash in grub to profile and update grub the laptop restarts and shuts down perfect, when i change it back to quiet splash it doesnt shut down or restart.

Going to try one other solution first..saw that someone said to set optimized defaults to win8 64 bit and that this fixed the problem without a bios update.

Yes that should work, then use the Windows BIOS update tool.

I think that was mentioned in one of the comments in the link...

You have nothing to loose, but not on this..??
I changed the OS optimized defaults setting to Win 8 64bit, saved setting in BIOS and then restarted and shut down laptop several times. It did it without any problems, shuttnng down completely, restarting fine. All worked as it should be.

Going to have a go at updating the bios, just need to get a screwdriver and the old harddrive. So be back in a little bit after finishing installing harddrive, updating bios and putting SSD back in the laptop
Updated BIOS to v3.01, back on LL again. ll working fine again.
Marked the topic as solved
Glad it's sorted... enjoy the new Laptop with LL3 Smile
