I've read a number of comments on the internet now that state that 'upgrades in Linux Lite 3.x is like how Windows 10 is pushing their upgrades' This is possibly one of the most inaccurate analogies in regard to Linux Lite that I have seen to date. This thread is an opportunity to clear some things up.

So what happens during these 'Automatic Upgrades'?

- The Windows 10 comparison. The Windows 10 upgrade is from 7 or 8 to Windows 10. Thats analogous to us suggesting you upgrade from Series 2.x to Series 3.x In actuality a feature that people have asked me to implement, but for which I have resisted against. The Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrade is a huge change in UI, we would never make such a radical change within a Series.

- Only new programs are added. Some of these will be system features. libhal for example. Not an actual application that you click on and use, but instead a deb package that allows folks to watch Hulu in their browser. I will only add applications that have wide appeal and that have been requested by people, eg. when I added Systemback.

- Ubuntu upgrades you automatically within their LTS series. I'm not saying we're doing it because they do it, it's just interesting to see the same people who are saying they don't want theses upgrades on LL, are using or have used Ubuntu.

- There are no changes to your home folder in Series 3.x. In Series 2.x we did make changes to your home folder. In hindsight, this is somewhat intrusive. eg. you may already be using a custom terminal theme that you spent time creating, only to have me change it to something else.

I hope this makes the automatic upgrade process in Series 3.x a lot clearer.

If you need any more clarity, please let me know.
Very helpful information, thanks Jerry.
All I need to know is how to enable automatic updating.  Point me in the right direction.
@Monkeyman this article covers automatic upgrading. If you'd like help with automatic updating, please open a new thread in the appropriate Forum section. Thank you.
I've been meaning to ask about this as I noticed it when installing.
Do we get the option to choose a convenient or suitable time to do the upgrade?
Can we opt out altogether if we wish?
There's no settings or anything when going Menu > Settings > Lite Upgrade, just a message an upgrade will be available in November.
Just for the record I'm not saying I don't want the upgrades, but those are a couple of questions I've been asked by people I've installed LL 3.0 for.

All good questions JmaCWQ Smile

The Upgrade is automatic and gets sent out when the next version of Linux Lite gets sent out, just like what Ubuntu does in LTS. ie. When 3.2 is released, you'll automatically get the upgrade.

Can we opt out altogether if we wish?
Yes, absolutely!
Just go into Install/Remove Software (Synaptic) search for lite-upgrade-series3 and remove it completely. Ignore any warnings you get.
Thanks Jerry.

Just a bit more clarification why I asked if we could choose when the upgrade happens, a couple of people I helped convert to LL have very limited internet usage, they're pensioners on mobile broadband with very low data usage per month, in a couple of instances only about 1GB with the plans they're on.
If they go over this amount they get their speed throttled & despite Telstra insisting everything still works just slower, in reality that's not the case as it makes their internet practically unusable & when it's like that updating and upgrading are better off being left until their plans renew for the next month & they get full speed again.

As it'll most likely be me that helps with any issues I just need to clarify something I'm not 100% sure about.
If I remove the Lite Upgrade series 3 via synaptic can I still do the upgrades at a convenient time via the Terminal?

Yes, just reinstall lite-upgrade-series3 at the time that you need it.

Code:
sudo apt-get install lite-upgrade-series3
Very cool, doesn't get much easier than that does it....

Thanks again Jerry  8)
