I would like to know, do we need firewall and anti-virus applications on Linux systems? There are links for installing these applications, but is it safer to leave original system files without installing additional software?

By default LL has a firewall built in..
From menu type firewall... you'll be prompted for password..

My opinion... better to have something than nothing, with that if you have a router you're already behind a FW...
But for open wifi, it wouldnt hurt to have LL FW enabled..

I have a router so I dont know anything about firewalls.

I also have firefox web browser installed which is immediately infected when I get online.....mostly from malicious pop-up windows.


I have set browser cache to Zero which has helped alot...

I read a review which states that ClamTK is nearly useless as an Anti-Virus.

I have downloaded sophos but not yet tried to install it.
Another post says its CLI only *gulp*

I disagree.  When I was running Windows, I had 3 or 4 different virus/malware/etc progs that constantly caught all the misc bad stuff.  When I didn't use those, I could tell there were bad things on my computer.  I have yet to use any anti virus prog on this machine and have never had an issue.  Not that it can't be infected but it's a heck of a lot more remote than with either Windows or Mac.
