To start the new year 2016 with an experiment I installed Linux Lite 2.6 64bit version on my old MSI notebook. Everything seems to be working well and I will report details of the hardware (and any problems, if they should occur) soon.

I live in Germany and have been a Linux user for more than 15 years. I prefer distros that are easy on resources (because I only have older, cheaper computers  Tongue ) so Linux Lite looks like a good match for me!  8)

Have a great year, everyone.

Ciao,

Welcome,

Good choice, yes LL is lite on resource usage.
If you have any issues, a great community here to help,

Hi Wirezfree,

Thanks for the reply and friendly reception.

My machine is running very well (sound, wireless, videos, etc) right out of the box! I have now installed the Linux kernel 4.3.3-amd64 and it too is working perfectly!  Smile

Since my RAM is only 1 Gig I set my swappiness down from the default value of 60 to a more reasonable 5.

After logging in to the standard xfce4 desktop my RAM usage was around 230 MB. I installed and set up the Fluxbox wm and, after searching and experimenting around, managed to get it to start when I log-in. Now the RAM usage after log-in to the Fluxbox session (and with xfce-power-manager running) is down to a more reasonable 120 MB or so.  8)

My old laptop specs (from running inxi -F) are:

Alles Gute auch für Sie, Little.Walter. And happy newyear for every-one.
Have fun with LL!
Glad to have you and your 15 years of Linux experience added to the forum.
Hi Jocklad, rijnsma & torreydale,

Thank you, vielen Dank, muchas gracias!! I appreciate the warm reception and hope that I can perhaps help answer some "noobie" questions from others. I know that my start with Linux was not easy, and I would like to try to help others moving away from the M$-Überwachungsstaat (surveillance society) in whatever way I can.

Ciao,

Little Walter
