Linux Lite Forums

After downloading a file I go to the downloaded drop-down list and if I try to execute the file or even try to open the folder it is located in I get the Linux Lite update dialog box and then if I proceed I get a dialog box that requires my password.

After entering the password it proceeds to check for updates and later tells me I am up to date. Then exits.

Anyone? Anyone?

What exactly do you mean by this?  Are you opening your Downloads folder in your home with the file manager, or are you referring to some kind of list you see in Firefox?  Can you provide a screenshot of what of the problem?  Hit <PrtScn> key, or go to Menu -> Accessories -> Screenshot.  Follow directions under "Inserting Images" on this post to attach screenshot to your next forum post.

What type of file are you downloading?  A file with an ".exe" at the end of it?  If so, that is a file type meant for Windows and does not work on Linux.

I believe he's referring to the download icon within FireFox (the downward arrow in upper right) shows lists of downloaded items and an option to open the containing folder...

FWIW, I tested a .exe file on my system, which launches "Archive Manager" (although preferences could be modified)
I'd be curious the file extension..
Maybe this will help in the meanwhile while awaiting an update...

Please post the contents of your /etc/gnome/defaults.list file.

firenice03 is correct it is an icon that has my recently downloaded items.

What type of files?
Mostly video files from youtube << I believe I corrected this through the Firefox applications tab under preferences.

I was able to play *.mp4 files before but now it seems that all files trigger the system update (tried to get a snapshot) It also happens if I try to open file location instead of executing it from the same list.



The file type that seems to be giving me grief is *.zip file. Those seem to initiate an system update. I believe thats the only file right now.

Thunar is set as preferred

I hope I did that right. This has got to be the strangest issue I have had with Linux so far.

Not sure what happened along the way, but at some point file associations have been changed.

Go into your home folder, press Ctrl+H. This will show/hide hidden files.

First, back up: /home/buddy/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list by right clicking on it, Create back up copy.
Then edit the original by taking out all the old contents, and replacing with:


Then open a terminal and do:


Open Firefox and do, History, Clear Recent History, Time range to clear: Everything, tick everything and clear it all.

Now reboot.

Everything up to entering the terminal code was done with no problem.

ln: failed to create symbolic link ‘/etc/skel/.local/share/applications/defaults.list’: File exists

I get this in the terminal after entering what you have asked.
